What is drawn-over-mandrel tubing?
DOM is a manufacturing process used for precision mechanical tubing. Welded steel tubing is cold-drawn through a die and over a mandrel, improving dimensional control and the inside and outside surfaces. ASTM A513 identifies drawn-over-mandrel tubing as Type 5.
OD, wall & inside diameter
DOM round tube is commonly described by outside diameter and wall thickness. The nominal bore is calculated as ID = OD − 2 × wall. A 1.500″ OD × 0.120″ wall tube therefore has a nominal 1.260″ ID.
Grade, condition & tolerances
Include 1020, 1026 or the grade your drawing requires. Grade, heat treatment, mechanical properties and dimensional tolerances need to be confirmed for the supplied material. A size alone does not establish these requirements.
Documentation & fit
Request material test reports or traceability when needed. For machined bores, telescoping assemblies or close fits, provide the required limits and finish rather than relying on nominal dimensions.
Your cut list. One request.
Request stock lengths or finished cut lengths. For mixed orders, list the quantity and length for every item, along with the required cut tolerance. We will review the material and processing requirements together.
| Include in your inquiry | Example format |
|---|---|
| Tube dimensions | 1.500″ OD × 0.120″ wall |
| Quantity and length | 12 pieces × 36″ long |
| Material requirement | Specified grade, condition and ASTM requirement |
| Processing and paperwork | Length tolerance, end finish, test-report requirement |
| Delivery | Country, ZIP / postal code and requested date |
Examples illustrate how to specify an inquiry; they are not pre-priced offers. Freight and processing are confirmed in the quote.
DOM tubing questions
What does DOM mean?
DOM means drawn over mandrel. The process cold-draws welded mechanical tubing through a die and over an internal mandrel to control dimensions and surface finish.
Is DOM tube seamless?
DOM begins as welded tubing. Drawing refines its dimensions and surfaces, but does not make it a seamless manufacturing process. If your drawing requires seamless tubing, identify that requirement in your inquiry.
How do I specify a DOM tube size?
Start with outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness, then provide finished length and piece quantity. Nominal inside diameter (ID) is OD minus twice the wall thickness. Include your required tolerances separately.
Can I request custom cut lengths?
Yes. Include the length and quantity for each cut, plus the required length tolerance. Processing capability, charges and lead time are confirmed in the quote.
Are the displayed sizes in stock?
This is a quote-request catalog. A representative confirms supply, grade, tolerances and lead time for each inquiry before an order is agreed.
Are 1020 and 1026 interchangeable?
Do not substitute a grade without approval. Specify the required grade, condition, mechanical properties and documentation from your drawing or purchasing specification.
